“You never know if you ever want one of your greatest moments to ever be surpassed, or if you don’t want any future experiences to surpass them.”
Growing up, coffeeandtrance was influenced by all sorts of music – hip hop, pop-punk, good ol’ classic rock, jazz and even reggae. He considers them his musical phases, which grew and expanded along with his age. It then comes as of no surprise that his first dip into creating music were on instruments like the drums, guitar and piano.
When electronic music came into his life while he was in university, that opened up his eyes to its wonders and he transitioned to mixing back in 2016. Stuff by Aphex Twin, Nicolas Jaar, Tycho and Oceanlab being the sounds that influenced him the most.
“I don’t like buying new things actually so I still have the same first initial mixer. When I first started mixing, I was solely focused on deep house and trance records. Keeping an open mind is rather difficult when you don’t even know what you’ve got to open it up towards. But anyway, gradually over time I learned to branch out into other genres such as disco and UK left field. I probably credit disco in having the most influence on me as regards the technicality of record mixing. Listening to the early Hessle Audio records was a big initial influence on me as well.”
When he first started mixing, it was like a gradual spontaneity with things seemingly falling right into place for him. 2016 to 2020 was spent practicing by himself and then when the pandemic hit (and along with it, some extra free time), coffeeandtrance whimsically decided to start streaming.
There’s been no looking back since and he has ample fond memories from his streams and sharing music.
“Some of my favorite moments would either be getting my Q-Grader certification in 2018 (not valid as of 2024) OR playing Orbital’s ‘Halcyon + On + On’ to 850 people on Twitch. It’s interesting, isn’t it? Because you never know if you ever want one of your greatest moments to ever be surpassed, or if you don’t want any future experiences to surpass them. It’s tough to be sure” he recalls.
Having fun is the most important task to him and when it comes to his motivation for music, he says that usually comes in extemporaneous bursts of inspiration.
coffeeandtrance started getting more heavily involved with Birdcage Radio circa 2024 as he received more frequent invites to events. “Around this time, I also started hanging out with the reggae crew (rootzman, tablist, etc.) more often. It is quite an honor to be recognized by such a renowned group, but also more holistically, it is an honor to get to share music with others at all!”
