vederlicht vinyl
Welcome to the Vederlicht Vinyl shop, Birdcage Radio's latest studio addition where you can find, buy, sell or simply have a cosy listen to some records. Our community's affinity with vinyl ranges from collectors, hoarders, impulsive buys (we've all been there)... But deeper than that, is our interest in sharing and discovering new music with others - here's where we make it happen.
the vederlicht vinyl story
If you’ve spent any amount of time around Birdcage Radio, you’ll know that a lot of what happens here grows organically. Ideas tend to take shape over time, slowly and steadily, often starting small, sometimes personal, and usually without much fuss before quietly finding their rightful place. They tend to grow out of side projects, tapping into each other's respective strengths, random exchanges of ideas, conversations at odd hours, and a shared love for doing things just because they feel right. We’re always looking at possibilities of new and interesting offerings and ways of growing our studio and subsequently, our community.
Vederlicht Vinyl fits neatly into that lil’ tradition of ours.
So, what’s it all about you might ask? Well, before it became a record shop, Vederlicht was something much smaller and far more personal. Rochelle explains that it began simply as a way to keep track of her own collection. It wasn’t meant to be a shop or a brand. T’was just an Instagram page where she could catalogue records and have a clearer overview of what she owned, started long before reels, algorithms and the pressure to “do something” with everything.
“It wasn’t a shop or anything of sorts. I basically wanted to create a database where I could easily overview all my records. So, I started an Instagram page for it, which is way before the time of reels and whatnot. Such as many tiny side projects go, I let it go after a while, though I had never deleted the page. It’s amazing to blow new life into it now!” she shares.
Breathing new life into Vederlicht as a vinyl shop feels less like launching something new and more like picking up on a thread that was already there. And in typical Birdcage fashion, it was also something already so evidently in line with what our community is very knowledgeable and passionate about, it just made complete sense.
Vederlicht Vinyl is a second-hand record shop housed inside Birdcage Radio, and it feels exactly like you would hope it does. It’s relaxed, unpretentious, and very clearly made for people who enjoy spending time with music rather than racing through it. You’re free to browse at your own pace, flip through records, ask questions, or just quietly dig without feeling like you’re in anyone’s way.
In terms of the selection, it leans heavily towards electronic music in all its forms. Disco, House in all its sub-genres, Electro, Techno, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop, and the many places where those sounds bleed into each other. The emphasis isn’t on sheer quantity or on stocking obvious must-haves, but on building a collection that feels considered and coherent, where records make sense next to one another.
There’s also a clear desire to keep things approachable. Vederlicht isn’t trying to turn vinyl into something precious or intimidating. Records are priced with accessibility in mind, and the atmosphere encourages conversation rather than hushed reverence. It’s the kind of place where you can talk about a sleeve you like, ask where a record came from, or leave with something you didn’t know you were looking for. And boy is it a cozy little room in which this all takes place too, if we could say so ourselves.
Part of what Vederlicht Vinyl hopes to become is a small gathering point for people who care about music in Utrecht. Not in a grand, scene-defining way, but more as a place where regulars start recognising each other, where recommendations get passed around, and where vinyl culture feels lived-in rather than preserved behind glass. Also, from time to time, there may be listening sessions, pop-ups, or small collaborations with local artists and DJs, mostly as a way to keep the space active and connected to what’s happening around it.
In line with that whole community aspect we mentioned, Vederlicht Vinyl invites people to become part of it quite literally. If you have records you are ready to let go of, you can sell ‘em through the shop without too much hassle.

In the end, Vederlicht Vinyl feels less like a new addition and more like a natural extension of Birdcage Radio itself. It's a place that grew out of personal passion, took its time finding the right moment, and now exists simply because it makes sense to exist. A place to linger, to discover, to reconnect with music in a way that feels unhurried and human. Perhaps you’ll walk out with a record you didn’t even know you needed - it’s already happened a fair number of times to us.
And hey, if nothing else, it’s just another good reason to stop by the Birdcage Radio studio, take a look around, and maybe spend a bit longer than you planned.
We look forward to having you join us there!
